Don’t Do This With Your Advanced Readers in K-2
As educators, we talk quite a bit about how to support struggling readers. But on the flip side - we also have advanced readers.
While advanced students might not need the same level of support as their peers, they still need (and deserve!) our guidance to build skills and continue growing as readers.
In this video, I’ll share practical tips for working with students who are advanced readers.

How do you coordinate all the needs at the same time for the varied levels? Do you have them all reading in small groups during the period? Do they actually stay on task when you aren't with them?

I definitely recommend forming small groups based on students' needs. It makes the time more efficient and more meaningful! They can/should be flexible as the year moves on so that as you receive up to date data, you can shift groups around if needed.

I remember my first big fight with the Principle and Superviser was over a desicion that i've made (students following me on screen rather than on books) just bc they play with their books and get distracted. The Principle didn't tolerate that. it was my first month teaching and i thought it was best for the students (didnt have much experience back then). First year teaching you'd make so many wrong decisions, you should know it's okay and not beat yourself up. I feel like schools should always respect the space teachers have and that they are the decision makers in their classroom, they try to come up with the best decisions.

I’m trying to figure out what I should do to start my 4yo with preschool at home. I’ve heard writing letters is a precursor to reading? Does the order of learning sounds vs writing matter? If my kid is 4.5 when we will start, will he do well learning writing and phonics simultaneously? Thank you for this video! Helps me understand and have more confidence in the phonics flash cards we’ve been running through occasionally to ease into it.

Hey! I think you could start exposing him to letters and letter sounds. Pointing to them, having him/her identify them. Eventually, the child could also use multisensory materials (like sand or shaving cream) to write the letters in too.
